Boro's pre-play-offs fixture ends in Chasetown defeat

By

Two first-half goals from Chasetown was enough to see Radcliffe slump to a 2-0 defeat at the Scholars Ground in their final Evo-Stik West game before the play-offs.

The game might have been academic in terms of the final standings for Boro, but a performance may have been useful going into the play-offs feeling better about themselves.

Windy conditions seemed to play a big part in the early stages for both sides, as punts forward from Kingsley Williams and Liam Kirton went astray despite miniscule power in the opening five minutes.

It was however, the home side who took the lead, 10 minutes in. A promising attack from Daniel Vann down the left found the feet of Will Whieldon, who had time for a cool finish past Ollie Martin from 10-yards.

Seven minutes later and the former FA Cup giant killers doubled their lead. Vann again causing problems from left-back as he jinked his way to find George Cater, who also danced his way into the 18-yard box, and like Whieldon, rolled the ball past the Boro number one.

Boro's Elliot Rokka could have brought Jon Macken's men back into the game as he saw himself through on goal, but opted to cut back inside onto his left and Callum Cockerill-Mollett made it back to clear.

Whatever Macken said at half-time to his players, it certainly made an instant difference as Boro announced their front-foot intentions seconds in with crosses into the box, before regular starter Scott Metcalfe was introduced three minutes after the restart.

The substitute almost payed off, when the Boro number 14 found himself near the penalty spot but couldn't direct his powerful attempt past Curtis Pond's palms.

Ben Wharton and Tunde Owolabi were introduced 65 minutes in, but the 47-goal pair couldn't break the Chase's barrier for the remainder of the game.

Radcliffe now turn their attention to local rivals Ramsbottom in the semi-final of the Evo-Stik West play-offs on Tuesday night, 7:45pm at the Neuven Stadium.
